Sure enough, by the time our class was over, the campus was drenched. During one workshop, however, our cell phones beeped with flood warning alerts. By October, the rains came and the island cooled. As I would later learn, that August was the hottest in the history of O‘ahu.ĭespite the heat, the students kept up with the coursework as we explored sonnets, villanelles, and imagism. “It’s 90 degrees outside.” I took roll, reviewed the syllabus, and began our first creative-writing exercise: haiku. ![]() The students filed in, out of breath and sweating. It was fall 2011-my first semester teaching in the English department at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. I arranged ten desks in a circle in preparation for students the first day of my undergraduate poetry workshop. ![]()
